About the author
J. B. Lightfoot (Joseph Barber Lightfoot, 1828–1889) was an English Anglican bishop and biblical scholar known for rigorous scholarship and clear prose. Three of his works are held here, all centred on New Testament study and apologetic debate: a commentary on St. Paul's Epistles to the Colossians and Philemon, which expounds the text passage by passage with attention to historical setting and language; Essays on the Work Entitled Supernatural Religion, an academic response to the anonymous Supernatural Religion, defending the historical reliability of the Gospels; and Sermons, a collection of addresses for the church, plain in style and instructive in content. Public information is limited, so biographical details cannot be given in full, but these works show a scholar who combined academic enquiry with pastoral care and who influenced later traditions of New Testament commentary.
