Reading tips

- Language learners can first read a chapter straight through to grasp the feel of the language, then read closely paragraph by paragraph with a dictionary to build up local vocabulary.
- Read alongside maps or local gazetteers to help reconstruct the rural geography and social environment of the novel.
- Researchers should check the pagination and paragraphs of the public-domain electronic edition and cite the source version information.

About the author
Marià Vayreda (1853–1903) was a Spanish Catalan painter and writer known for his landscapes and novels. Active in the cultural milieu of the nineteenth-century Catalan revival, he brought a strong sense of place to both his painting and his literary work. His novel Sang Nova is his best-known representative work, focusing on the life and fate of people in his native region; its style is plain and its feeling restrained, reflecting a painter's keen observation of natural light and rural life. Because public information is limited, a full account of his life, his complete body of work, and his precise place in literary history cannot be given here. Even so, the available facts show that he worked in both painting and writing and holds a place in the local literary and artistic tradition of Catalonia, and his works are still mentioned by students of the region's literature and art of that period.
