Editor's review

This is the Finnish translation of the Roman poet Horace's work Runoudesta (that is, Ars Poetica), a free eBook from Project Gutenberg. In this book, Horace discusses in epistolary form the principles of poetic composition, the cultivation of the poet, and the standards of criticism; the language is concise, and its views have had a profound influence on later Western literary theory. As an important text of classical literature and poetics, its value lies in offering a classical perspective for understanding the function and craft of poetry. When reading, note that this is the Finnish version, suitable for readers who can read or are learning Finnish, and it can also serve as supplementary material for studying Horace's poetics against the original. About the author

Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus) Author · Ancient Roman

Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus) was the most distinguished lyric poet of the Augustan age in ancient Rome. Born on 8 December 65 BCE in Venusia, Italy, and died in Rome on 27 November 8 BCE, he first joined Brutus and later, after the defeat at Philippi, came under the patronage of Maecenas, devoting himself to writing in Rome. His works cover a wide range of subjects: lyric pieces on love, friendship, feasting and rural pleasures, as well as satires and verse letters that criticise social manners and discuss morality and the philosophy of life. The Odes are noted for strict metre and concise language, while The Art of Poetry sets out poetic principles in epistolary form and has deeply influenced the Western poetic tradition and literary criticism. Nine of his works are held in the collection.
