About the author
Lucien Pissarro (1863–1944) was a French painter and printmaker, the son of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and an important figure in the British wood engraving movement. In his prints he emphasized the expressive qualities of the burin and the grain of the wood, helping to turn wood engraving from a means of reproduction into an independent art form and influencing the development of modern printmaking in Britain. One of his works, titled Rossetti, is held in the collection and centers on Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Public information on the details of his life is limited; his contribution lies chiefly in his printmaking practice and his role in advancing the new wood engraving movement.
