Reading tips
- First read Dowden's overview of Browning's poetic style as a whole, then match each chapter to the corresponding phase of the poet's work.
- Keep a Browning anthology at hand and read in parallel when the biography quotes specific works.
- Distinguish biographical fact from the author's evaluation, and mark judgments that reflect the prejudices of the era.
- After finishing, consult modern Browning scholarship to compare Dowden's emphases with those of contemporary scholars.

About the author
Edward Dowden (1843–1913) was an Irish literary critic and poet, three of whose works are held in this collection. Public information is limited, but the titles listed show that his writing spanned literary criticism, literary history and poetry. Robert Browning is a study of that Victorian poet's life and art, while A History of French Literature shows Dowden's ability to survey the development of a national literature and trace its course with clarity. Poems indicates that he also wrote poetry himself, combining the roles of creative writer and critic. On the whole, his works are chiefly literary studies and verse, marked by a careful style and a gift for understanding writers and their works within their historical context, and they contributed to Victorian literary criticism and the writing of literary history.
