Editor's review

Robert Barr was a late 19th- to early 20th-century Anglo-American writer of popular fiction, best known for his short mystery and plot-driven stories. Revenge!, a collection of short pieces, revolves around the theme of revenge, with tight plotting and the typical pleasures of late Victorian popular literature: setups, misunderstandings, reversals, and moral reckoning. This is a free English ebook from Project Gutenberg, suitable as light reading for understanding English short fiction of the period. Its value lies not in deep intellectual analysis but in observing how popular narrative organizes suspense and emotion, and how the revenge motif is commonly handled in English genre fiction. As a public-domain ebook, this edition has no modern annotations; readers should have basic English reading ability and understand its pacing in the context of the newspaper serialization of the author's time. Suitable for commuting or short reading sessions, one or two stories at a time, paying attention to how plot twists are set up.
