About the author
William MacGregor (1846–1919) was a British colonial official and physician. He served as an administrator in British New Guinea and later as Governor of Queensland, leaving a record in colonial administration and local governance. Beyond his official duties, he observed and studied the local peoples, and his interests and writings reflect the attention paid by late nineteenth-century British colonial officials to the societies and populations of the South Pacific. The library holds one work by him, Report, which belongs to the genre of official or investigative reporting; its content is likely related to his administrative responsibilities and local observations, and its style favors factual record over literary description. Because public information is limited, details of his life and scholarly standing are difficult to elaborate, and this book may serve as a clue to his colonial administrative background and ethnographic interests.
