About the author
Joseph Medill Patterson (1879–1946) was an American journalist and writer active from the late nineteenth to the first half of the twentieth century; public information about him is limited. The library holds only one of his works, Rebellion. Judging from its subject matter, Patterson's writing focuses on the tension between social order and individual defiance, with a direct tone, realistic narration, and the concise style and observant eye characteristic of a newspaperman. His writing reflects his background in the press; though his output was small, it left some impression on readers of his time and offers a useful sample for studying American social thought and popular writing of that era. Because biographical materials are scattered, his education, posts, and specific experiences cannot be verified and are not speculated upon here; a full assessment of his literary standing awaits further historical research.
