About the author
Santeri Alkio (1862–1930) was a Finnish writer, politician and journalist, born in Laihia. Originally surnamed Filander, he joined the Young Finnish Party in his early years, later became a leading thinker of the Agrarian League, and founded the newspaper Ilkka. As a literary author, he wrote novels such as Puukkojunkkarit and Uusi aika; the library holds thirteen of his works, including Eeva and Jaakko Jaakonpoika. His writings are largely drawn from Finnish rural life and the condition of the peasantry, combining social realism with an Enlightenment spirit. Public information is limited, so a detailed account of his life and the phases of his writing cannot be given.
