About the author
Grover Cleveland (1837–1908) was an American politician who served twice as President of the United States. Public information about him is limited, and five of his works are held in this collection, most of them related to presidential documents and public affairs. Among them, A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents is a compilation of presidential messages and papers, State of the Union Addresses collects his annual addresses to Congress, and Presidential Problems deals with the administrative and institutional issues of his presidency. Fishing and Shooting Sketches, by contrast, is a collection of essays on angling and shooting, showing that his writing was not confined to political documents. Overall, his texts consist mainly of official papers, speeches, and political commentary, written in a solemn and plain style, and serve as important primary sources for understanding American presidential politics and public documents at the end of the nineteenth century.
