Reading tips
- First read several poems aloud to feel the sounds of Dutch, then use a dictionary to understand the meaning word by word.
- Read in groups by theme or length, close-reading a small amount each time rather than reading straight through.
- Excerpt favorite lines and mark unfamiliar words to build your own language-learning notes.
- Compare with Dutch or German poetry in the public domain to compare word choice and rhythm.

About the author
Jan Jakob Lodewijk ten Kate (1819–1889) was a Dutch minister and poet. Public information about his life is limited, and his reputation rests chiefly on his poetry and translations. He wrote the poetry collection Poëzy, and his work is known for hymns and narrative poems, written in a solemn style rich in religious feeling, often weaving the experience of faith into his verse; in this he holds a place in the nineteenth-century Dutch tradition of religious poetry. Beyond his original poems, he devoted himself to translating Dante, introducing the Italian classic to Dutch-language readers. This translation work echoed both his calling as a minister and his literary interests, and it left its mark on the history of literary reception in his country. The present collection contains one work by him.
