About the author
Sidney Lanier (1842–1881) was an American poet, musician, and literary critic. Born in Macon, Georgia, he graduated from Oglethorpe University. Captured during the Civil War and afflicted with tuberculosis, he suffered from poor health for the rest of his life, yet served as a flutist with the Peabody Orchestra in Baltimore and lectured on English literature at Johns Hopkins University. His poetry is notable for its musicality and attention to prosody, often drawing on nature and Southern scenery while combining lyricism with reflection. Five of his works are held in this collection, including Select Poems of Sidney Lanier, The Poems of Sidney Lanier, Bob: The Story of Our Mocking-bird, The English Novel and the Principle of its Development, and Poem Outlines, reflecting both his creative writing and his thinking on poetics.
