Editor's review

This is a Dutch-language work by the Belgian author Cyriel Buysse, released by Project Gutenberg as a public-domain eBook. Buysse was an important novelist in Flemish literature, and his works mostly focus on village life and local society, with a realist tone. The book is short and in Dutch, making it a rare free source text for readers learning Dutch or studying the literature of the Low Countries. Because the Project Gutenberg edition is intended for public-domain distribution and the text was prepared by volunteers, it may retain early spelling or typographical conventions; readers should focus on understanding the content rather than expecting a meticulously edited edition. For Chinese readers, this book is better suited as supplementary reading for language learning or regional literary study than as a first choice for casual reading. If you are looking for a short, freely available Dutch source text to practice with, it is worth a try.

Reading tips

  1. Read through once for the gist before looking up words paragraph by paragraph, to reduce frustration on a first reading.
  2. Use a Dutch-Chinese dictionary or online translation tools, noting high-frequency words as you read.
  3. After finishing, write a hundred-character summary in Chinese to check whether you have grasped the main thread.
  4. If studying the author, read him alongside other Flemish realist writers for comparison.

His representative works include 'The Van Paemel Family', 'The Life of Rozeke van Dalen' (in two parts) and 'The Little Donkey'. This library holds 17 of his works, including 'From Flanders', 'Guustje and Zieneken: Sketches of Peasant Life', 'Brother and Sister', 'The Black Food' and 'The Merry Journey', spanning short sketches, longer fiction and drama. Public information is limited, so biographical details are omitted here, yet his work remains representative of the Flemish naturalist tradition.
