About the author
Francis Rolt-Wheeler (1876-1960) was an English-language author of children's and young adult books active in the first half of the twentieth century; details of his life are limited in publicly available sources. Nine of his works are held in the collection, most of them informative adventure novels for young readers. The "Boy With the U.S." series is especially notable, covering the U.S. Survey, Foresters, Miners, Weather Men, Census and Life-Savers, and weaving knowledge of geography, natural resources, science and government affairs into the travels and adventures of its young protagonists. He also wrote sea adventures such as Plotting in Pirate Seas and war-themed works such as The Wonder of War on Land. His writing emphasizes popular knowledge and lively plots, using series-based subjects to introduce young readers to professions and the natural world.
