Reading tips
- First read the bibliographic information and opening pages on the Project Gutenberg page, assess the vocabulary difficulty, and then make a reading plan.
- Read chapter by chapter; after each chapter, retell the plot in one or two English sentences to combine comprehension with language practice.
- Mark expressions that carry a strong period flavor, and after finishing, look up the background in a focused way to avoid misreading.
- If used for teaching, excerpt passages and compare them with contemporary children's stories to discuss differences in narrative and ideas.

About the author
Isabel M. Peacocke (1881–1973) was a New Zealand writer of children's literature. Public information about her life is limited, and what can be confirmed mainly concerns the direction of her writing and one representative work. Her works mostly take adolescent adventure and family life as their themes, and she was skilled at developing narratives suited to young readers within everyday settings. Her representative work is Piccaninnies. Although only one of her works is held in this collection, her choice of themes still shows her attention to growth, exploration, and family affection for a young readership. Her writing has a certain significance in the early development of New Zealand children's literature, but owing to limited sources, a fuller account of her life and oeuvre remains difficult to provide.
