Summary

The PHP 5 Manual is the simplified Chinese version of the official PHP documentation from the PHP 5 era, usually circulated as an e-book, CHM file, or online documentation set rather than as a teaching text written by a single author. Its content is edited and maintained jointly by members of the PHP Documentation Group, with the Chinese portion translated by a domestic team of translators; it is thus more a reference work iterating alongside the language version than a linear textbook. The book is organized by language features and extension modules: it first covers installation and configuration and the language reference (lexical structure, types, variables, constants, expressions, operators, control structures, functions, classes and objects, namespaces, and so on), then lays out built-in functions and extensions one by one, such as string and array handling, regular expressions, date and time, files and directories, networking and sockets, database access (MySQL, SQLite, PDO, etc.), XML and SimpleXML, image processing, sessions and cookies, and error and exception handling. Each function entry generally gives the syntax signature, parameter descriptions, return values, example code, and user notes—findable and copyable, which is its core value. Compared with PHP 4, PHP 5 introduced a more complete object-oriented model (abstract classes, interfaces, exceptions, magic methods) and improved database abstraction and XML support, so the manual's descriptions of these new capabilities also became an important basis for developers migrating and upgrading at the time. As a translation, its terminology and examples follow engineering usage and read less warmly than a tutorial, but it excels in comprehensive entries and detailed indexing. Note that PHP 5 reached end of life at the end of 2018, and the PHP project removed PHP 5 documentation from the main manual in 2020; this manual is suitable only as a historical reference for maintaining legacy systems.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • 正在维护 PHP 5 遗留系统、需要随时核对函数行为的开发者
  • 想了解 PHP 5 面向对象模型与扩展机制的历史形态的技术人员
  • 需要一本成体系的 PHP 函数速查资料放在手边的工程师
  • 对开源项目官方文档的翻译与组织方式感兴趣的读者

Not a good fit for

  • 零基础、希望按章节循序渐进学会写网站的初学者
  • 使用 PHP 7/8 开发新项目、需要现行语法与安全实践的读者
  • 期望获得项目实战案例与架构设计指导的读者

Reading tips

  1. 把它当字典用:先搭好目录与索引,按函数名或扩展名检索,不要从第一页顺读。
  2. 结合当前版本官方手册对照阅读,遇到已被废弃或移除的功能及时标注,避免照搬。
  3. 读到函数范例时在本地环境跑一遍,注意 PHP 5 与新版在类型比较、错误处理上的差异。
  4. 关注面向对象、异常与 PDO 几章,这些是 PHP 5 相对 PHP 4 变化最大、也最有版本史价值的部分。

FAQ
