Reading tips
- First learn about Wieland's place in German literary history and the eighteenth-century literary background, then read the text.
- Read alongside a history of German literature or a related introduction to make up for the lack of annotations in the electronic edition.
- While reading, pay attention to narrative structure and character arrangement, and use the electronic search function to organize thematic threads.
- For coursework, read the whole text first and then excerpt in sections, rather than quoting out of context.

About the author
Christoph Martin Wieland (1733–1813) was a German writer, represented in this catalogue by four works. Public information about him is limited, but his surviving works give a sense of his literary range. The novel Geschichte des Agathon, transmitted in two parts, follows its hero's moral and intellectual development and stands as an early and important attempt at the German Bildungsroman and psychological novel. Oberon, a chivalric romance blending narrative, fantasy and allegory, later supplied the source for Weber's opera of the same name. Geschichte des Prinzen Biribinker is a playful, fantastical tale. Wieland's graceful, elegant style combines Enlightenment reason with light Rococo imagination, giving him a place in the transition of German literature from the Enlightenment toward Classicism.
