Editor's review

Roger Dombre's "Nounou" is a public-domain French novel, digitized and released by Project Gutenberg under the category of French literature. Judging from the author's active years and the work's classification, it carries the flavor of late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century French popular narrative and serves as a sample for observing the themes and language style of French fiction from that period. The electronic edition's advantage lies in its complete text and searchability; readers can use it as supplementary material for French reading practice or for the study of French popular literature. Lacking a modern introduction and annotations, readers must supply their own linguistic tools and background knowledge. The book's length and narrative pace suit segmented reading, and one should not expect strong modern dramatic conflict. For French learners, it offers authentic nineteenth-century French language data; for literary scholars, it can be read as a marginal text against mainstream classics. Overall, this is a public-domain work suited to readers with a clear purpose rather than casual browsing.
