About the author
Gustaf Fredrik Steffen (1864–1929) was a Swedish sociologist and writer whose work focused on social structure, migration, and labor issues. During his lifetime he took part in public debate through social-science writing, and his works show a markedly empirical bent, seeking to understand the changes of modern society in terms of social conditions and institutional arrangements. His representative work, Normalarbetsdagen, centers on the question of working hours, reflecting his sustained interest in the situation of laborers and the organization of work. As far as can be seen, Chinese translations of his works and biographical materials about him are rather limited, and publicly available information is scarce, making it difficult to describe in detail his education, posts, or specific social activities; the library holds only one of his works. Even so, the surviving clues suggest that he was concerned with how social structure shapes the labor and daily life of ordinary people, an orientation that gives his writing a certain significance in Swedish social science of his time.
