About the author
Gonçalves Crespo (1846–1883) was a Portuguese Parnassian poet. Born in Brazil, he made Portuguese literature his home. His work follows the Parnassian emphasis on form and craftsmanship: his verse is refined and concise, attentive to diction and clear imagery, and he holds a place in nineteenth-century Portuguese poetry. His representative work Miniaturas is known for its short, finely wrought pieces, and Nocturnos is also counted among his representative works. Only one of his works is held in this collection, and publicly available information about his life and writing is limited, so his education and social experience cannot be described in detail. Overall, his poetry succeeds through restrained emotion and meticulous technique, reflecting the spread and influence of Parnassianism in Portugal.
