About the author
Enrico Castelnuovo (1839–1915) was an Italian writer. Public information about his life and education is limited, and 11 of his works are currently held in this collection. Judging from works such as Natalìa ed altri racconti, Dal primo piano alla soffitta, Nella lotta and I coniugi Varedo, he drew mainly on family relationships, marital ethics and the everyday lives of ordinary people, and was known for novels and short stories. His writing is detailed and attentive to his characters' choices and moral struggles in difficult circumstances, with a realist tendency. Some of his works are classified in Chinese library catalogues under inspirational and personal growth, suggesting that his portrayal of endurance and character development has a certain appeal. Overall, his plain narratives present human nature and social life, and offer some reference value for understanding the life and feelings of the Italian middle class in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
