About the author
Ferdinando Fontana (1850–1919) was an Italian poet and playwright. Living from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century, he worked in both poetry and drama and also wrote opera librettos. His representative works include the verse collection Poesie e novelle in versi and the play Nabuco. In the field of opera, he wrote librettos for Puccini's early operas, and this collaboration linked his name to the history of Italian opera. Fontana's writing spans poetry and drama, with a polished language rich in lyric and narrative qualities, and his subjects are often drawn from literary imagination and historical legend. Because public information is limited, details of his life, educational activities, and a precise chronology of his works are difficult to set out, and scholarly assessment of his overall achievement remains modest. Two of his works are currently held in the collection, offering basic clues for further study of the man and his writings.
