About the author
Nancy Witcher Langhorne Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879–1964), was a British politician born in the United States. She entered the House of Commons in 1919, becoming the first female Member of Parliament in Britain—a fact that in itself remains the most distinctive mark of her public career. Her representative work, My Two Countries, centers on the two nations she knew well, Britain and the United States, and reflects personal observation and experience of political life. Given the limited publicly available information, her writing style and literary influence are difficult to describe in detail; judging from its subject matter, however, her writing is closer to a political figure's record of her own experiences and transatlantic background than to literature in the strict sense.
