Editor's review

This book is a local history of Munster by Stephen Gwynn, a public-domain work of historical geography published by Project Gutenberg. Its value lies in sketching the overall character of Ireland's southern province of Munster in a relatively concise span, covering geographical, historical, and human threads, making it suitable as an introductory read for understanding Irish local history. Its strength is a readable narrative that avoids elaborate academic argumentation, so readers can make progress during a commute or in short sessions. Note that the original was written long ago, and its historical framework and phrasing bear the marks of its time; it should not be used as the latest research. The English original also poses some difficulty for non-native readers. It is best suited to readers interested in Irish history and geography who are willing to read English public-domain books, and works even better when consulted alongside paper guidebooks or travel materials.

Who it's for

Reading tips

  1. Start with the table of contents and chapter titles to build a rough framework of Munster's geography and history.
  2. Read alongside a map or online geographical resources to locate place names in the book.
  3. Treat it as background reading and read one section a day; there is no need to finish it in one go.
  4. Mark unfamiliar place names and historical figures first, then review them together after finishing.

About the author

Stephen Lucius Gwynn Author · Irish · 1864–1950

Stephen Lucius Gwynn (1864–1950) was an Irish journalist, biographer and poet, as well as a nationalist politician who served as a Galway city councillor from 1906 to 1918. He wrote biographies including The Life of the Rt. Hon. Sir Charles W. Dilke and The Last Years of John Redmond, served with the British army during the First World War, and later founded the Dublin publishing house Maunsel. His writing ranged from biography to works on local places; the volumes Leinster, Connaught, Munster and Ulster in the library reflect his interest in the history and character of Ireland's provinces, while Thomas Moore and Irish Books and Irish People address Irish politics, culture and figures.
