Editor's review

Mount Music is a novel co-written by Martin Ross and Edith Oenone Somerville, a public-domain work of English literature made freely available by Project Gutenberg. Its value lies in offering readers a window into the English novel of the early twentieth century; the two authors are adept at delicately portraying Irish rural life and personal relationships, and their narrative carries a gentle humor and an observation of human affairs. As a public-domain e-book, it suits readers who wish to encounter original works of English literature at low cost, and also researchers interested in the Irish literary tradition or in the phenomenon of collaborative writing by women authors. When reading, it is advisable to slow the pace, attend to dialect and period expressions in the dialogue, and draw on notes or background materials to understand the social context. Because it is an early work, the plot advances slowly and relationships are laid out at length, requiring some patience. Overall, this is a literary work best savored slowly in a quiet setting rather than a diversion for those seeking strong plot.

About the author

Edith Oenone Somerville (E. Oe. Somerville, 1858–1949) was an Irish writer who worked for many years with her cousin Violet Martin, and whose writing is known for its depiction of Irish rural life. Thirteen of her works are held in the collection, including the novel The Real Charlotte, Some Experiences of an Irish R.M. and its sequel, written with Martin, as well as Through Connemara in a Governess Cart, Mount Music and In Mr. Knox's Country. Her works are mostly set in the Irish countryside, portraying landlords, officials and local people with humour and restraint, and presenting local customs and social relations with both comic colour and an eye for real problems. Public information is limited, but these works alone show her distinctive place in Irish regional literature.
