About the author
Roy Norton (1869–1942) was an American writer of popular adventure fiction. Public information about him is limited, and the details of his life are little known to general readers, who chiefly encounter him through his works. Two of his books are held in this collection, The Plunderer and Mixed Faces. His novels are mostly set against the backdrop of the wilderness frontier, the sea, and adventure, with plots driven by journeys, perilous situations, and the fortunes of their characters, bearing the clear imprint of early American popular adventure literature. Such works value narrative pace and readability, drawing readers in through the rough texture of their settings and the urgency of action, rather than dwelling on subtle psychological portrayal. Norton's writing belongs to the American popular reading market of the early twentieth century; though not counted among the classics, it offers a sample for understanding the popular tastes of adventure fiction in his time.
