Editor's review

This is the German public-domain electronic edition of Hermann Knackfuss's monograph on Michelangelo, an art-history text. Its value lies in tracing Michelangelo's life and work from the perspective of early art-historical writing; the prose has the typical style of German art popularizations from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, letting readers see how scholars of that time told the story of this Renaissance master. As a free Project Gutenberg eBook, it is easy to search, excerpt and read alongside visual material. Note that this edition is in the original German, and public-domain reset editions generally contain no modern scholarly notes or high-resolution plates; readers should ideally view the works alongside reliable art books or museum resources. It is better suited to reading as art-historical background and as German-language learning material than as a substitute for modern research monographs.

FAQ

What language is this book written in?
The text is in German. The page information is in English, but the work's language is marked as German, so a foundation in German is needed to read it.
Does the book contain illustrations of Michelangelo's works?
Public-domain electronic reset editions are usually text-based, and plates may be limited or of poor clarity; it is best to view the works in a separate art book or online collection.
Is this a modern scholarly work?
No. The author Knackfuss lived in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the book reflects the art-historical perspective of that time; it should be read as a historical text.
Can I read it without any German?

About the author

Hermann Knackfuss (1848–1915) was a writer on art history active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; details of his life are limited in publicly available sources. Nine of his works are held in this collection, most of them devoted to major Western painters, including Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Dürer, Frans Hals, Velázquez, Titian, Murillo, and A. von Menzel. These books are chiefly artist biographies and commentaries on their works, addressed to general readers. His writing is plain and clear, concerned with tracing each painter's creative development and artistic characteristics while giving attention to the historical context. Rather than pursuing abstruse scholarship, he emphasized the transmission of knowledge and guidance in appreciation, which gives his work a representative place among the art popularizations of his time and still makes it a useful basic reference for understanding these painters' lives and works.
