Editor's review

Martva III is the third part of Maiju Lassila's Martva series, likewise released free of charge in the original Finnish by Project Gutenberg. As a later volume in the series, it carries forward the characters and plot of the first two parts, giving readers a fuller view of the author's satirical portrayal of rural society and human nature, with a style that continues Lassila's characteristic humor and cool observation. The Gutenberg edition is easy to search and carry, suitable for readers already engaged with the series. Note that this volume is not a good first read: without the groundwork of the earlier books, understanding and enjoyment suffer; the electronic text also has limited notes, so historical and dialect details must be checked independently. Overall, it works best as one link in a series reading plan rather than a standalone selection.

FAQ

Can I read this without the first two parts?
Not advisable. Martva III is the third part of the series, and its characters and plot continue from the earlier books; reading it directly makes it easy to lose context and weakens understanding of character motives and satirical targets, so it is best read in order.
Is there a Chinese translation?
Project Gutenberg provides an electronic book in the original Finnish with no Chinese translation. Chinese readers need Finnish ability or must rely on translation tools and dictionaries.
How does the reading difficulty compare with the first volume?
As a later volume, it assumes the reader is already familiar with the characters and background, and its narrative relies more on what came before, so it is harder to enter than the first volume and better suited to readers already engaged with the series.
Is the electronic edition suitable for academic citation?
Public-domain electronic texts can be used for general reading and preliminary citation, but academic writing should check authoritative editions and page numbers and supplement biographical and contextual materials rather than relying on the electronic text alone.

About the author

Lassila, Maiju (1868–1918) is an important author in Finnish literary history. Public information about her is limited, and the details of her life are not recorded in the available sources, yet the thirty works held here show how prolific she was. Her representative works include Tulitikkuja lainaamassa, Kuolleista herännyt: Seikkailukertomus eli etsijän tarina, Manasse Jäppinen, Pojat asialla and Mestari Nyke: Romaani, merkkiteos, whose titles often suggest humour, adventure and everyday life. Her output spans novels and stage works; Luonnon lapsia: 4-näytöksinen huvinäytelmä, for instance, is a four-act comedy. She often drew on rural figures and the fortunes of ordinary people, writing in a light, playful tone with gentle satire of human manners and social life. Her works circulated widely among Finnish readers, and some have become enduring pieces in the national literary tradition.
