Editor's review

Mad Barbara is a novel by British author Warwick Deeping, in the public domain. Deeping is known for character fates and emotional entanglements; this book centers on the heroine Barbara and has the dramatic tension and characterization common to popular fiction. As a public-domain ebook, its significance lies more in presenting the narrative style of early twentieth-century British popular novels: plot driven by changing relationships, relatively plain language, suitable for extensive English reading. Readers should note the distance between period attitudes and today's values and read from a literary-historical perspective, focusing on character motivation and social context rather than mere plot excitement.

Who it's for

FAQ

Is this book suitable for English beginners?
Not really for absolute beginners. The original is an early twentieth-century English novel with period flavor in syntax and vocabulary; it is recommended for readers with intermediate or higher English reading ability, or with annotated or guided editions.
Why is it recommended to read this book from a literary-historical perspective?
The characters' attitudes and narrative style bear clear marks of their era. Placing it in the context of early twentieth-century British popular fiction helps better understand the plot arrangement and characterization, rather than judging simply by contemporary standards.
What if I can't finish a long English novel?
Read a chapter summary before returning to the original, or set a small goal of ten pages a day. You can also find reading partners to discuss chapter by chapter, using output to drive input and reducing the chance of giving up.

About the author

Warwick Deeping (1877–1950) was a British novelist whose career spanned the first half of the twentieth century; nine of his works are held on this site. Public information about him is limited, and his early life and education cannot be reliably established, but his surviving works show a gift for narrative set against historical and legendary backgrounds, as well as an interest in women's lives and domestic and moral themes. Such representative novels as Bertrand of Brittany, The King Behind the King and Uther and Igraine draw on medieval British legend and struggles for royal power, with compact plots and a strong romantic colouring; A Woman's War, The Pride of Eve and The Slanderers turn to social reality, focusing on women's predicaments under the pressures of marriage, reputation and public opinion. His novels are fluently narrated and vividly characterised, and he found a readership in the fields of popular historical and sentimental fiction.
