Editor's review

Love at Second Sight is a novel by the English writer Ada Leverson and a fine example of Edwardian social comedy. Leverson is known for her brisk dialogue and her delicate observation of upper-class daily life; this book turns on misunderstandings and rediscovery in love and marriage, with a light plot, witty conversation, and a gentle vein of irony. As a free public-domain eBook from Project Gutenberg, it is extremely easy to obtain and serves as an accessible introduction to early twentieth-century British popular fiction. Readers may wish to watch for the irony and social subtext in the dialogue, which are the chief pleasures of Leverson's work. Note that this is the original English edition, and public-domain books usually lack modern annotations, so some reading ability in English is required. Overall, it is better suited to leisure reading or as a supplement for those interested in literary history than as a weighty, plot-heavy tome.

Reading tips

  1. Read a chapter or two first to get used to the author's rhythm and dialogue style before settling into the plot.
  2. Keep pen and paper handy to track the characters; social comedy often has a large cast, and clear relationships make the humor easier to follow.
  3. Slow down at moments of irony or social implication and note what lies beneath the dialogue.
  4. Read it alongside other Edwardian novels to appreciate the shared pleasures of popular fiction of the period.

FAQ

Is this book in Chinese or English?
This is the original English-language eBook released by Project Gutenberg. It is in English and has no Chinese translation, so some English reading ability is needed; a dictionary or the built-in lookup of an e-reader can help.
Will the lack of modern annotations hinder understanding?
The book centers on dialogue and everyday social life and does not depend on a large body of allusions or specialized background, so most readers can finish it smoothly. If an occasional period term or social custom is unclear, skipping it will not affect grasp of the main thread.
Is it suitable as English-learning material?
It can serve as extensive reading material: the sentences are mostly dialogue and the length is moderate. But it is a novel from a century ago, and some expressions differ from modern English, so it is not recommended as the main material for intensive study or exam preparation.

About the author

Ada Leverson Author · British · 1862–1933

Ada Leverson (1862–1933) was a British novelist, born in London into a wealthy Jewish family and known for her witty comedies of manners. A close friend of Oscar Wilde, she was called "the Sphinx" by him and supported him during his trial and imprisonment. Her works focus on the emotional manoeuvring of marriage and social circles, with a light, ironic tone and a gift for revealing her characters' self-deception through dialogue and detail. Six of her works are held in this collection: Love's Shadow, Tenterhooks, The Twelfth Hour, The Limit, Love at Second Sight and Bird of Paradise. Public information is limited, and her life and work are chiefly discussed in relation to the friendships and style described above.
