The Linux Command Line

This book is the Chinese translation of the second edition of The Linux Command Line, offering a systematic exploration of Linux command-line usage and shell programming. The book is divided into four parts. Part one begins with the fundamental concepts of terminal emulators and the shell, introducing command-line input and editing, the file system structure, directory navigation, file and directory operations, accessing command help and manuals, redirection and pipes, shell expansions, advanced keyboard techniques, file permissions, and process management, helping readers build a solid foundation in the command line. Part two focuses on configuration and the environment, covering environment variables and startup files, the basics of the Vi editor, and how to customize the command prompt through configuration files. Part three turns to common tasks and essential tools, covering practical scenarios such as package management, storage media and file systems, networking, file searching, archiving and backup, regular expressions, text processing, formatted output, printing, and program compilation. Part four provides a comprehensive introduction to shell programming: from writing your first script, setting up a project, and top-down design, to flow control statements such as if, while/until, case, and for, reading keyboard input, handling positional parameters, string and numeric operations, arrays, and other commonly used commands, with dedicated discussion of troubleshooting and script robustness. The second edition has been updated for Bash 4.x and features improved scripting examples, making the content more relevant to the practical use of modern Linux distributions.
