Editor's review

This book is a critical biography of Lawrence by the British writer S. L. Bensusan. It is an open-access English public-domain title from Project Gutenberg, classified under fine arts and painting. It is short and serves well as an introductory read for understanding Lawrence as a person and an artist. In an essayistic style, the author sketches the painter's life and creative trajectory; the prose is plain and combines biographical narrative with artistic commentary, making it useful supplementary reading for the history of British painting. The electronic edition is easy to search and carry, suitable for browsing in spare moments such as commutes or afternoons. Note that the book is in the original English and was written rather early, so some judgments carry the limitations of their time; readers should treat it as a reference and cross-check it against other art-history sources.

About the author

Samuel Levy Bensusan Author · British · 1872–1958

Samuel Levy Bensusan (1872–1958) was a British writer, art historian and chronicler of rural life, born in Deptford, London. He worked early on as a music and drama critic, and later contributed painter biographies to the "Masterpieces in Colour" series, covering artists such as Velázquez, Rubens and Murillo. In clear, concise prose he sketched each painter's life and artistic character, bringing Western painting to general readers. His interests also ranged to distant places and literary landmarks, yielding books on Morocco and on Shakespeare's homes and haunts. In later years he settled in Essex, where he devoted himself to writing about country life and dialect in a plain, gentle style. Twelve of his works are held in this collection, some classified under inspirational growth.
