About the author
Eliel Aspelin-Haapkylä (1847–1917) was a scholarly Finnish author in the fields of cultural and art history; eleven of his works are held in this collection, covering Finnish theatre history, art history, and biography. His representative multi-volume History of Finnish Theatre systematically traces the development of the national stage, while An Outline of Finnish Art History sketches the country's artistic evolution in concise form; he also wrote a study of the life of Alfred Kihlman. His Muoto- ja muistikuvia series is essayistic and reminiscent in character, with plain prose attentive to historical detail. Because public information is limited, his personal life and specific posts are difficult to describe in detail, but his works show a historian who builds broad narratives on documentary sources, valuable for preserving and spreading Finnish national culture and art-historical writing.
