Reading tips
- Try the first two chapters to assess whether the French difficulty and narrative pace match your level.
- Use a French dictionary or electronic lookup tool, accumulating high-frequency expressions as you read.
- Use it as daily extensive reading at a fixed number of pages, avoiding word-by-word translation that slows progress.
- After finishing, briefly note character relationships and emotional threads to help map the narrative patterns of popular fiction.

About the author
Max du Veuzit (1876–1952) was the pen name of Alphonsine Zéphirine Vavasseur, a French woman writer. Born in Le Petit-Quevilly and later based in Bois-Colombes, she was known for her sentimental novels and produced a very large body of work. Her representative works include Le Noël des Petits Gueux, L'Aumône and Paternité; she also wrote Les Châtaigniers and several social-themed plays. Her writing generally centers on emotional entanglements and the warmth and coldness of social life, in an accessible and fluent style that won her a wide readership in popular literature. Public information about her life and creative career is limited, and existing accounts rest mainly on her works and basic biographical facts, with emphasis on the thematic concerns and style shown in the novels and plays mentioned above.
