Reading tips
- Read the opening pages first to feel the rhythm of the language, then decide whether to read straight through or skip around.
- Keep pen and paper to note recurring images such as water and the city, and revisit how they change after finishing.
- French learners can close-read a short passage each day, reading it through before looking up words to avoid stopping at every term.
- Read alongside Régnier’s poetry to appreciate shared qualities of imagery and language.

About the author
Henri de Régnier (Régnier, Henri de, 1864–1936) was a French Symbolist poet and novelist, and a member of the Académie française. Born in 1864 and died in 1936, he lived across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period in which French Symbolism rose and then began to shift. In poetry he inherited the Symbolist emphasis on suggestion, musicality, and inner states, while treating themes such as dreams, desire, and fate in a more compressed and restrained manner, shaping a personal Symbolist style. In fiction his narratives often interweave psychological analysis with a poetic atmosphere rather than resting on plot alone. The library holds one work by him, La cité des eaux (The City of Waters), which reflects his preference for imagery and sensory description and may serve as an entry point to his writing. Because public information is limited, details of his life and the chronology of his works remain to be supplemented; on present evidence, however, he occupies a place in the lineage of French Symbolist literature, and his poetry and fiction offer a useful reference for understanding the varied faces of Symbolism.
