About the author
Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830–1916) was an Austrian novelist, born in Zdislavice, Moravia (now in the Czech Republic), and died in Vienna. She is known for her depictions of Moravian rural life and Austrian aristocratic society, with an elegant style and profound character portrayal, and is regarded as one of the foremost German-language women writers of her time. Three of her works are included here: Kunnanlapsi, Rittmeister Brand Bertram Vogelweid, and Ein Buch, das gern ein Volksbuch werden möchte, commonly categorized as inspirational growth. Her writing draws on rural reality and human observation, delicately presenting ordinary people's struggles and growth, and has exerted a certain influence in German literary history. Because public information is limited, the details of her life cannot be described fully.
