Editor's review

This classic children's picture book by British illustrator and author L. Leslie Brooke tells the lively story of animals visiting Johnny Crow's garden in nursery-rhyme verse and vivid illustrations. The language is brisk and full of repetition, making it ideal for reading aloud and helping children absorb English rhythm naturally; the simple, humorous line drawings give each animal a distinct look that is both a pleasure to view and easy to identify. As a free Project Gutenberg eBook, it opens instantly on a phone, tablet, or computer, and selected pages can be printed for parent-child activities. It works both as an early English reader for young children and as a light sample for illustration lovers studying the style of early children's books. Note that the original is in English; Chinese readers will do best reading it together with a child or relying on the pictures rather than word-by-word study.

Reading tips

  1. During shared reading, look at the pictures and guess the animals first, then read the verse and have the child repeat the repeated lines.
  2. Zoom in on the illustrations in the eBook, point to and name the animals as you read, and play a find-and-name game.
  3. Read two or three pages a day, clapping the beat to feel the rhythm of the English verse.
  4. After reading, have the child retell in their own words which guests came to the garden, practicing expression.

FAQ

Is this book suitable for children with no English at all?
It is suitable as a starting point for shared reading. The sentences are short, highly repetitive, and clearly illustrated, so children can follow the story through the pictures first and hear the rhythm as an adult reads, without needing to recognize words from the start.
What should I watch out for when reading the eBook?
Use a device that lets you enlarge the illustrations to protect your child's eyes; if printing pages, choose a clear mode and prioritize spreads with distinctive animals for pointing-and-naming interaction.
How is this book different from ordinary English picture books?
It comes from the early children's picture-book tradition, with verse and illustrations closely intertwined and highly repetitive language suited to reading aloud and rhythm games; as a public-domain eBook it is also free, easy to use across devices, and printable for class.

About the author

Leonard Leslie Brooke Author · British · 1862–1940

Leonard Leslie Brooke (1862–1940) was a British artist, author and illustrator of children's literature. Born in Birkenhead, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He made his name with pen-and-ink illustrations for Andrew Lang's nursery-rhyme collections, and went on to write and illustrate many children's books of his own. His best-known works include Johnny Crow's Garden, The Golden Goose Book, The Story of the Three Little Pigs and Little Bo-Peep; seven of his titles are held in this collection. Brooke's clear, lively line work and his gift for blending traditional rhymes with humorous narrative made him a leading figure of the golden age of British children's book illustration, and his picture books have influenced later generations of illustrators.
