Editor's review

Jerry Junior comes from Jean Webster, author of Daddy-Long-Legs, and is a light, humorous novel. Webster excelled at creating young characters through lively dialogue and playful plotting, and her works often carry a light romantic-comedy touch. This book is offered as a free electronic edition by Project Gutenberg, making the original American literary text accessible at low cost. When reading, pay attention to tone and humor in the dialogue and savor the narrative rhythm of early twentieth-century American popular fiction. It suits English extensive reading and readers who enjoy light stories and want to explore Webster's other works. Because it is the English original with no annotations, readers should have basic English reading ability before attempting it.

FAQ

Is this book similar in style to Daddy-Long-Legs?
Both are by Jean Webster and are generally light and lively, focusing on dialogue and emotional interaction. But the plots and characters differ, so they are not simply the same; read both and compare for yourself.
How difficult is the English?
It is early twentieth-century American popular fiction with fairly colloquial language and moderate difficulty. Basic English reading ability is enough to try; guess unfamiliar words from context.
Is it better for classroom use or self-study?
It is better suited to self-study or extracurricular extensive reading. Since the e-edition has no annotations or exercises, classroom use would require the teacher to supply background materials and reading tasks.

About the author

Jean Webster (1876–1916) was an American author. Public information about her education, awards and specific life experiences is limited; what can be confirmed is chiefly her literary output. Sixteen of her works are held in this collection, including Daddy-Long-Legs, Dear Enemy, Jerry, and Setä Pitkäsääri, Vadertje Langbeen, Het John Grier Home, Much Ado About Peter and Paras vihollinen, several of which are different-language versions of the same titles. Her writing often uses the epistolary form and a light, humorous tone, focusing on orphanages, the growth of young women and education, with lively dialogue and gentle social concern. Daddy-Long-Legs is her most widely circulated work and the one for which later readers remember her.
