Initials Only is a full-length detective novel by Anna Katharine Green (1846–1935), a pioneer of American detective fiction, published in 1911 by Dodd, Mead & Company of New York and one of the series featuring detective Ebenezer Gryce. The novel has a three-part structure: Part One, "As Seen by Two Strangers"; Part Two, "As Seen by Detective Sweetwater"; and Part Three, "The Heart of Man." It opens with the crowd pouring out of a Broadway theater: a strolling couple notices a gentleman behaving oddly, repeatedly rubbing and washing his hands in the snow, and then learn that a young, wealthy woman has suddenly died nearby in the Clermont Hotel. There was no shortage of witnesses at the time, yet no one can explain the weapon or the method; all that remains are clues signed with initials, and the dead woman appears to be "O. B." The young detective's assistant Caleb Sweetwater takes up the case, and the trail points to a proud and brilliant inventor, setting off a long intellectual duel between them. Green is known for meticulous evidentiary detail, multi-perspective narration and psychological portraiture, and the book is regarded as one of the representative works of early American detective fiction.
