Editor's review

Il Concilio is a full-length work by the Italian writer Ferdinando Petruccelli della Gattina (1816–1890), released as a public-domain eBook by Project Gutenberg. The author lived through the Italian unification movement, and his political writings and narratives often carry a sharp critical edge. This book takes as its subject the "council"—a theme in which religion and politics intertwine—and can be read as a literary response from nineteenth-century Italian intellectual circles to the relationship between Church power and the secular order. For Chinese readers, its value lies not in narrative fluency but in offering a primary text for observing the internal tensions of the Catholic world and the construction of the Italian nation-state. Reading it requires some historical background, especially on Church-state relations around the First Vatican Council. It is best approached as documentary literature, alongside relevant historical introductions, to appreciate both its edge and its historical limitations. Suited to readers in Italian literature, Church history, or nineteenth-century European political thought who prefer slow reading.

FAQ

Is this book a novel or a work of political commentary?
The available information does not specify the genre; given the author's identity and the "council" theme, it carries strong political and satirical overtones and is closer to literary intellectual commentary than to a popular novel driven by plot.
Can I read it without any knowledge of Italian?
The original is in Italian, and the available information mentions no translations into other languages. Chinese readers without Italian will need translation tools or related research materials; the barrier to entry is high.
Why recommend it?
It preserves a direct nineteenth-century Italian intellectual response to Church power, has documentary value for understanding Church-state relations and nation-state construction, and is easily accessible as a public-domain eBook.

About the author

Ferdinando Petruccelli della Gattina (1816–1890) was an Italian writer whose biography and nationality are poorly documented in publicly available sources. Eleven of his works are held here, spanning novels and political writing, with themes centered on religion, power, and political life. His representative work Memorie di Giuda reconstructs the figure of Judas in the first person and carries a marked anti-clerical and satirical tone; the multi-volume Il re dei re likewise addresses religious and secular authority. I moribondi del Palazzo Carignano and Il Re prega turn to Italian politics and contemporary criticism. His sharp style, reliant on exaggeration and polemic, gave him a certain influence in nineteenth-century Italian literature and political debate.
