About the author
Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837) was an Italian poet, essayist and thinker. Public information is limited, so his biographical details are not set out here; this note relies only on the works recorded in the catalogue. Four of his works are included: the poetry collection I Canti, two English-language collections of his poems, and Essays and Dialogues. These works show him writing in both poetry and prose. His verse is concise in language and cool in imagery, meditating on the passing of time, the uncertainty of human life and the indifference of nature; his essays and dialogues use argument and imagined conversation to observe human nature, society and civilisation, in a restrained and reflective tone. His writings have had a lasting influence on later Italian literature and the European lyric tradition, and have been widely translated and studied.
