About the author
V. Sackville-West (Victoria Sackville-West, 1892–1962) was an English writer known for both poetry and fiction. Five of her works are held in this collection: the poetry volumes Orchard and Vineyard, Poems of West & East, and Heritage, together with the novels The Dragon in Shallow Waters and The Tale Of Mr. Peter Brown - Chelsea Justice. These titles show two sides of her writing: a lyrical poetry whose concise language draws its imagery from rural life and travel, and fiction that attends closely to character and setting in a quiet, restrained tone. Public information about her life is limited, and biographical details cannot be firmly established here, yet these works are enough to indicate her place in early twentieth-century English letters. Her parallel paths in poetry and fiction give her writing both musicality and a strong sense of scene, which readers may best appreciate through the works themselves.
