Reading tips
- Read the table of contents and life chronology first to establish a framework of Haydn's life stages, then move into the individual chapters.
- While reading, listen to representative works by Haydn to combine the textual narrative with the listening experience.
- Mark period-specific judgments as you go, and after finishing consult contemporary research for comparison and critical assessment.
- Read in sections, briefly summarizing the key points after each chapter to avoid losing track amid the accumulation of biographical detail.

About the author
J. Cuthbert Hadden (James Cuthbert Hadden, 1861–1914) was a British writer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, known for biographical and music-critical works. Two of his books are held in this collection: Haydn and Thomas Campbell. The former is a life of the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, focusing on his career and compositions; the latter is a biographical and critical study of the Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. Together they show that he typically traced a subject's life and times in order to set his creative work in context, writing for general readers in an accessible, informative style that combines narrative with factual background. Because public information is limited, details of his birthplace, education and professional position cannot be reliably established, but his books have retained a modest readership for their popular treatment of musicians and poets.
