About the author
Johannes Diderik Bierens de Haan (born 1866) was a Dutch writer active mainly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Publicly available biographical information about him is limited, and little is known about his early life, education, or career; understanding of him therefore rests chiefly on his surviving works. One work by him is held in this collection, Goethe's Faust, indicating that his writing interests centered on literary study and the interpretation of classic texts, especially Goethe's major German work. Judging from the available material, his style tends toward academic close reading and exposition, attending to the internal threads of the text rather than offering popular commentary for a general readership. Such studies found readers in Dutch literary circles of the time and offer later generations a reference point for understanding how late nineteenth-century Dutch scholarship received Faust. Given the limited number of works and historical records, his overall influence is difficult to assess fully and awaits further research.
