About the author
Paul Heyse (1830–1914) was a German novelist, poet and playwright, and the winner of the 1910 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first German-language writer to receive it. He was a prolific author, with 22 of his works held in this collection. He is best known for his novellas and short stories, including Das Mädchen von Treppi and L'Arrabbiata, while his novel Kinder der Welt also attracted attention. His works often draw on the everyday and provincial life of Italy and Germany, with tightly constructed plots, finely observed psychology and a clear, lyrical prose that reveals human nature and fate through ordinary conflicts. Heyse also translated Italian poetry, contributing to German literature's absorption of Southern European traditions. Public information is limited, so his biographical details and the phases of his career are not elaborated here; readers may explore his fiction and translated poetry to appreciate a style that blends narrative, lyricism and dramatic tension.
