About the author
Bento de Oliveira Cardoso, Viscount of Vila-Moura (1877–1935), was a Portuguese writer and politician. Born in Baião and a law graduate of the University of Coimbra, he served as a member of parliament during the constitutional monarchy. His writing was influenced by decadentist aesthetics; his representative work Nova Safo (1912) provoked controversy for its bold subject matter, and he also published several critical works on the writer Camilo. Three of his works are held here: As Cinzas de Camillo, Fialho d'Almeida, and Nova Sapho: Tragedia Extranha. Public information is limited, and a full picture of his life and work remains to be established; the works available indicate an interest in both literary criticism and dramatic writing.
