About the author
Jonas Lie (1833–1908) was a Norwegian writer. Our library holds 18 of his works, but public information about his life and nationality is limited. Judging from the works available, his subjects are wide-ranging: they include the domestic and period-manners novel The Family at Gilje: A Domestic Story of the Forties, as well as sea-life narratives such as The Pilot and His Wife and stories of the sea. He also wrote tales with a northern folkloric flavor, such as Weird Tales from Northern Seas, and dealt with themes of social reality and individual fate. These works show that he combined everyday life, maritime experience, and imaginative narrative in a style that is realistic yet romantic in atmosphere.
