Editor's review

This is a Finnish poetry collection by Koskenniemi, one of the representative poets in Finnish literary history. Released as a public-domain ebook by Project Gutenberg, its chief value lies in preserving and circulating a Finnish literary classic in free electronic form, giving readers studying Finnish language, literature, and Nordic culture easy access to the original text. As poetry, the work is compressed in language and attentive to meter, making it useful for reading practice in Finnish and as an introduction for readers interested in Nordic literary tradition. Being a public-domain ebook, the edition is simple, with no modern annotations or introduction, so readers need some language foundation or reference tools. Overall it is not a popular reader but a primary-text document for specific language and literary research, best read alongside Finnish literary history.

FAQ

What language is this book in?
It is in the original Finnish, a public-domain ebook with no Chinese translation. Some Finnish foundation or a dictionary is needed to read it.
Can I read it without any Finnish?
Direct reading is not recommended. Poetry is compressed and metrically distinctive, so without language basics comprehension will be difficult. Start with background on the author and work, or find translations and criticism as support.
Does the book include annotations or an introduction?
As a Project Gutenberg public-domain ebook, the edition mainly preserves the original text and usually includes no modern annotations or introduction. Readers need to supply literary-historical and linguistic background themselves.

About the author

Veikko Antero Koskenniemi Author · Finnish · 1885–1962

Veikko Antero Koskenniemi (1885–1962) was a Finnish poet and literary historian, born in Oulu. He served as professor of literary history at the University of Turku from 1921 to 1948, as its rector from 1924 to 1932, and was elected to the Finnish Academy in 1948. Known for lyric poetry, travel writing, and essays, his works—including Hiilivalkea, Elegioja, Runoja, Valkeat kaupungit, and Hannu Nuori Anssi Sydän ja Kuolema—often draw on nature, city life, and personal feeling, with a concise, musical style that combines contemplation with national sentiment. He wrote the lyrics for Finlandia and is among Finland's most popular writers. Public information is limited, and a fuller picture of his output remains to be systematically studied.
