About the author
Jim Kjelgaard (1910–1959) was an American writer of children's and young adult literature. Eleven of his works are included in this collection, and they are commonly grouped under inspirational coming-of-age fiction. Animals and nature are central to his writing. His representative works include The Spell of the White Sturgeon, Double Challenge, The Duck-footed Hound, Swamp Cat, Rescue Dog of the High Pass, and The Black Fawn, as well as The Story of Geronimo and Hi Jolly!, which draw on historical figures and legendary tales. Because public information is limited, details of his life are difficult to verify. His works nonetheless show that he excelled at stories centered on young people's growth, interweaving human-animal relationships with tests of courage and responsibility in wilderness settings. The narratives are clear and briskly paced, well suited to young readers. His books have long appealed to generations of young readers in the English-speaking world and remain representative examples of coming-of-age animal fiction.
