Editor's review

Dorian is a novel by Nephi Anderson (1865–1923), classified under American and Canadian literature and released free in English by Project Gutenberg. As the earliest provider of free eBooks, Project Gutenberg pioneered electronic books through Michael Hart in 1971—a background that gives this volume significance beyond reading as an artifact of early digital publishing. The work itself is moderate in length with a complete narrative, making it a suitable introduction to American popular fiction of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and a useful supplementary source for readers studying literature with a Mormon background. Readers are advised to first acquaint themselves with the author's era and regional culture before entering the plot, so as to better appreciate the social attitudes behind the characters' choices. The electronic edition is convenient for searching and excerpting, suited to reading in segments during commutes or spare moments, but it should not be approached as a tightly plotted suspense or genre novel.
